RAW ART: The Illustrated Lives & Ideas of Robert Anton Wilson

I am entirely delighted and completely flabbergasted to have the opportunity to present RAW ART: The Illustrated Lives and Ideas of Robert Anton Wilson, a collection of my RAW based comix and art, published by the RAW Trust, on the Hilaritas Press label, in the same catalog as such immortal classics as Cosmic Trigger and Prometheus Rising! :)))

This is a very specific dream come true and I’d like to express my infinite love & gratitude to Christina Pearson, Rasa Deva, Eric Wagner, Toby Philpott, Tom Jackson, Mike Johnson, Mike Gathers, Prop Anon, Steve Fly, and Mr. Wilson himself, for all their help and support in the development of my RAW Art through the years. I’d also like to thank Daisy Eris Campbell, John Higgs, Greg Wilson, and Alan Moore for the rising cosmic tide they created, which has raised so many of our boats, surf’s up!

For the benefit of those who might have no clue what any of this is about, I should like to offer this brief history of my RAW origins:

State of the Art

Greetings OM!

(On all 3 vanishing points of the bird's eye view)

I'm happy to say that I am currently hard at work producing new artwork for RAW's Historical Illuminatus Chronicles.

Presently, The Widow's Son chapter illustrations are proceeding very nicely, as I try to stretch my imagination into a hyperspatial pretzel, so as to do this great work justice. The sketch pictured above is the rather humble beginnings of what eventually became my most complex RAW composition to date :)))

I've tried to take this opportunity as an invitation to elevate my craft, trying to bring my images up towards RAW's text, meeting on the level, parting on the square, and all that good $#!+.

As such I've found myself in need of an outlet to process this experience of self-induced creative initiation, and it occurred to me that the ideal place would be the Only Maybe blog!

So wd that everyone tuned in to this signal excuse & humor me as a sketch out my RAW thoughts, really just for my own edification, and for the fact that thinking out loud amongst intelligent people often yields interesting results.

WORKING PROCESS & INELUCTABLE MODALITIES

A lot of my drawing process involves mindless, repetitive details & patterns, so while my eyes and hands are occupied, I like to listen to research material for further projects.

Consequentially, I've been listening to a lot of Marshall McLuhan lectures lately, w/ a notebook at my side, jotting down all the jewels that he so effortlessly drops. His distinction of a cultural war between acoustic & visual spaces, for example, seems to be a much more useful dichotomy than conservative vs. liberal, in so far as making sense of our current state of affairs, or so it seems to me, through my rearview mirror.

I ended up getting sucked into that "Manhunt" Unabomber series on Netflix, and then that documentary "The Net: The Unabomber, LSD and the Internet" which sort of fused together w/ all the McLuhan stuff, and then branched out into RAW's Tale of the Tribe stuff, and still seems to be cascading through my imagination, tracing a new big picture from a constellation of subconsciously connecting data points. It's on days like this that I miss the Overweening Generalist!!

The Manhunt series is surprisingly generous in its depiction of Kaczynski, and generally very supportive of his ideas, treating the bombings as a kind of tragic personal/strategic flaw.

We're in such an awkward stage of development as a species/civilization that it makes sense to question the concept of progress. Mind you, I'm all for it, but am willing to admit it might not work out like I hope. Is it worth noting that the Buddha derived the first noble truth well before the industrial revolution? And that pervasive discontent may be a preexisting condition of the homo sapien nervous system? Only maybe.

I tend to model nature/humans/technology as a holistic system, and thus find the forward escape to be the more alluring option.

"The Net" documentary seems even more in the bag for Kaczynski than the TV series. There's a couple parts where the filmmaker, Lutz Dammbeck, is interviewing people personally affected by the bombings, and asks them to engage w/ Kaczynski's ideas as if the bombings were just a creative way to start a larger dialogue about an important issue, which naturally provokes angry and dismissive reactions.

I mean he basically implies to David Gelernter, a man who lost a hand to one of Kaczynski's bombs, that the Unabomber was justified in his actions. What's he supposed to say to that? Gelernter's response is quite fair enough actually, and maybe he was being teed up to give that kind of potent rebuke? IDK. Gelernter now seems to be a Trumpist style anti-liberal, which I guess makes a kind of perverse sense.

Harvard Psychologist Henry Murray emerges as a fascinating character in The Net's expanded Tale of the Tribe universe, who performed psychological experiments on a young Ted Kaczynski, and also oversaw Timothy Leary's initial LSD research.

[The Macy Conferences is a can so teeming w/ relevant worms that I dare not open it, except to note how well it compliments the material in the "Century of the Self" documentary series, i.e. post WWII social engineering/public relations/propaganda.]

From there Dammbeck seems to sketch out a scenario where the CIA is intertwined w/ the 60's counter culture in order to cultivate a globalist movement. A paranoid narrative straight out of the "Info Wars" playbook, which then became the Trumpist playbook. Nationalism vs. globalism, or as McLuhan would have it, print culture vs oral culture.

I was unnerved to learn that Steve Bannon shares my fascination w/ the Viconian ricorso, my main preoccupation while studying w/ RAW. I discovered this after I noticed how well our current cultural conditions match up with the "divine age," bringing us back to the beginning of the cycle. (Trump's meme magic cultists refer to him as their "god emperor" after all)

I've been spreading this passage of McKenna quoting McLuhan discussing Joyce's Finnegans Wake for 11 years now, its implications seeming much more clear and urgent to me now:

As his title indicates, he saw that the wake of human progress can disappear again into the night of sacral or auditory man. The Finn cycle of tribal institutions can return in the electric age, but if again, then let’s make it a wake or awake or both. Joyce could see no advantage in our remaining locked up in each cultural cycle as in a trance or dream. He discovered the means of living simultaneously in all cultural modes while quite conscious. The means he cites for such self-awareness and correction of cultural bias is his “collideorscope”. This term indicates the interplay in colloidal mixture of all components of human technology as they extend our senses and shift their ratios in the social kaleidoscope of cultural clash: “deor”, savage, the oral or sacral; “scope” the visual or profane and civilized.”

Excelsior!

Wise old words

The Bogus Magus plans to study on the Cosmos and Psyche Course, with Stan Grof, and Rick Tarnas.

One of the perks that comes with the course, a talk with Albert Hofmann.   It's actually available on YouTube, so it seemed a great idea to share it.   What an extraordinary man!

In this video he has probably reached the age of 99.

Countdown?

Apparently the KLF will arrive at News From Nowhere bookshop at 23 seconds after midnight (UK time).

This webpage recently appeared, but contains no clue as to whether it will stream live events, or what.

A little more info at Bidolito

'To celebrate publication of their novel 2023 (Faber & Faber), The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu will arrive in their Ice Kream Van at News From Nowhere on Bold Street in Liverpool at 23 seconds after the clock strikes midnight on the 22nd of August. Or to be more accurate at 00:00:23 on Wednesday the 23rd of August.

They will climb out of their Ice Kream Van and enter the shop.

News From Nowhere is a bookshop. It will be the first bookshop in the world to sell copies of 2023.

The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu will then sell and stamp copies of 2023  to all those that are there and are in need of a copy of the book.

Books will be limited to one copy per customer.

When the last customer’s copy has been stamped The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, will leave the shop; climb back into their Ice Kream Van; drive away and disappear.

2023 has been described as ‘a utopian costume drama set in the near future written in the recent past.’

Welcome to The Dark Ages

Although only 400 tickets went on sale, for this three day event in Liverpool, it seems you might still be able to buy one, as a few people have apparently  become nervous after receiving a gnomic email about their role (as 'volunteer' participant - no mere observer).

"The reference to the Jams film is also clear enough. This was again announced earlier this year when two DVDs were taped to a wall near Bill Drummond’s London home, which had previously been the site of several Jamsposters announcing their return this year.
A photograph of the discs was tweeted on the official K2 Plant Hire account (another of Drummond and Cauty’s many pseudonyms) without any explanation, but presumably with the full expectation that someone would retrieve the discs and upload their content to youtube. And so it transpired. You can still view that film trailer here"  [published 21 March 2017]

Enjoy, ye Chosen Ones!

John Higgs and Daisy Eris Campbell in 2014

Mainstream media

Finally, the BBC acknowledges the influence of the two Bobs' Illuminatus! trilogy, as one source of the myth/legend conspiracy theory about a sinister "Illuminati" which appears so popular now, but without the balancing cheerfulness and cynicism of the Discordian resistance.

In essence, trying to appear 'knowing' it seem people have adopted the mysterious hand signals, the gossip, the paranoia (Eyes Wide Shut and the Monarch/Manchurian Candidate stuff) without balancing that with the optimistic aspect.

They worry that the music business has been taken over by a nasty corporate entity, but haven't actually read the books, and appear to know nothing of  Laughing Buddha Jesus Phallus Inc.

Hey ho.  If people prefer horror movies to life-enhancing input, who 'am' 'I' to disillusion them.

I said mama but we’re all in Chapel Perilous now...

This sounded like a great day (or more), but this particular year your humble author did not make it.  Sigh..

See pictures, and find lots more details of the day, on the Hilaritas Press website.

Hey look, the meeting up of the daughters, of RAW and Ken Campbell!

This, from R.U.Sirius:

Has your S M I Two L E turned into a scowl?
Does weaponized idiocracy have you throwing in the towel?
Could anybody in this pinched surveilled nation write another Howl?
I said mama but we’re all in Chapel Perilous now
Are the students at your college acting like Maoists?
Have you seen weird apparitions like neonazi Taoists?
Does it seem perfectly normal that the President’s a crazy clown?
I said mama but we’re all in Chapel Perilous now
Did you read RAW and not get the joke
Are you gorging on conspiracies until you choke
r.u. even more dogmatic after taking a toke
How we wish Bob was here to make everybody Pope
Is Operation Mindfuck now with Gog and Magog
And some witless little nerd boy who loves Pepe the Frog
If nothing is true and anything is allowed
I said mama but we’re all in Chapel Perilous now

Lovely to hear of our very own Bobby Campbell and his latest book, of RAW art.

Check out all his prolific output here.

Borders

"Borders are a basic mammalian territorial imperative. All mammals want a territory, and they claim it by making excretions that make a topological outline, that’s the territory they claim. That’s why your dog pees on every tree when you take him for a walk. That’s the way the dog is marking his territory. Chimpanzees mark their territories with excretions too. The difference between human beings (or domesticated primates) and the other mammals is we mark our territories with ink excretions on paper—land titles, peace treaties, and so on. Every national border in the world marks a place where two gangs of domesticated primates fought until they were exhausted, and then made a territorial mark. That’s how national borders are created. We don’t throw excretions at each other like the chimpanzees, we throw chemicals and bombs and so on, but it’s basically the same mammalian process. The only intelligent way to discuss politics is on all fours." RAW

With thanks to an Article in Dangerous Minds.

In 1989 an hour-long movie called Borders about Robert Anton Wilson, author of The Illumnatus! Trilogy and the Cosmic Trigger series, was produced for public TV (WGBH Boston was one of the production companies behind it). The movie, directed by Merrill Aldighieri and Joe Tripician, is a blend of dramatic and documentary elements that also occasionally includes charmingly rudimentary computer graphics.

The rise of the new agnostics

'Let's get one thing straight: Agnosticism is not some kind of weak-tea atheism. Agnosticism is not atheism or theism. It is radical skepticism, doubt in the possibility of certainty, opposition to the unwarranted certainties that atheism and theism offer.'

Uncertainty

'Agnosticism doesn't fear uncertainty. It doesn't cling like a child in the dark to the dogmas of orthodox religion or atheism. Agnosticism respects and celebrates uncertainty and has been doing so since before quantum physics revealed the uncertainty that lies at the very groundwork of being.'

Humility

'Why has agnosticism fallen out of favor? New Atheism offers the glamour of fraudulent rebelliousness, while agnosticism has only the less eye-catching attractions of humility. The willingness to say "I don't know" is less attention-getting than "I know, I know. I know it all." '

The play of Cosmic Trigger has just started a new run in London, at The Cockpit Theatre.

Beautifully timed to coincide with that, Hilaritas Press has released an audio book version of Cosmic Trigger (the original book, not the play), read by the actor who plays Bob on stage - Oliver Senton.

May Our Minds Be Blown Just Right by Daisy Eris Campbell

May Our Minds Be Blown – Just Right — Daisy Eris Campbell
(MinorLits 02/05/2017 Essays & features)

I want to take you back to a moment I experienced about eight years ago. It’s a few weeks after my father, Ken Campbell’s, sudden and untimely death. I’m standing on the corner of two cobbled streets in Liverpool in the rain. And I’m looking at a bust of CG Jung. And that’s kind of weird because right at that moment I’m halfway through an essay about Carl Jung for a Master’s degree I’m doing. But that’s not why I’m there.

Stood next to me is Prunella Gee, Chris Langham and a guy called Peter O’Halligan. We’re all looking up at this bust of Carl Jung.

It’s there because Carl Jung had a dream about Liverpool and he wrote about it in his book, Memories, Dreams and Reflections. He said he thought it may be the most important dream he’d ever had. And he realised that in his dream, Liverpool was the Pool of Life.

I’m writing this essay about Jung’s ideas of the collective unconscious and synchronicity, a phrase he coined, and now I find myself looking at this bust of his head. And that bust has only been erected because of the tireless campaigning of Peter O’Halligan, who’s standing next to me. Because Peter O’Halligan is sure that this very spot is the exact spot that Jung dreamt about.

But just to the side of this bust is another unusual thing – it’s a plaque, set into the wall, which commemorates The Liverpool School of Language, Music, Dream and Pun.

This has also only been erected due to the tireless campaigning of Peter O’Halligan.

Because just over 30 years previously, which is when O’Halligan first found this illustrious Jung-Dream site, he also noticed that the building on the corner of these two streets – just along from where the Beatles first performed – was derelict. And so he adopted it, set up a caff, and called it The Liverpool School of Language, Music, Dream and Pun.

And the first production to be staged in a room above the caff, was an eighteen hour epic called Illuminatus!, directed by my father, Ken Campbell, starring (amongst many many others) my mother, Prunella Gee as Eris, Goddess of Chaos and Confusion, and co-adapted with Chris Langham from a novel by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.

And there we all are now, and I say “It’s weird because right now I’m in the middle of an essay about Jung“, then I realise that, although I’m doing a distance-learning Master’s degree, I am actually studying at John Moores University, based in Liverpool.

And Peter O’ Halligan tells me that John Moores knew my dad’s dad, my grandfather, who I never met, they were both from just outside Liverpool, and John Moores offered my grandfather the opportunity to get involved with his new business venture, but my grandfather declined. It was the football pools! Which made John Moores a multi-millionaire, which was how come he’d had enough money to build a whole university, where I was right now studying Carl Gustav Jung.

Waywords and Meansigns Opendoor Edition (Finnegans Wake set to music)

finnegans wake collaboratively set to music

For this 2017 release we gathered over 100 musicians and readers from 15 different countries to set James Joyce's Finnegans Wake to music.

Unlike our previous releases, which were both unabridged versions of the Wake, this is an incomplete "open edition", meaning we want YOU to submit your own recording. (Composer Andrea Riley has even written an open score, which you could interpret or perform. Click here to download.)

With releases in 2015, 2016 and now 2017, we have created some 70 hours of audio in total, setting the entire text of Finnegans Wake to music multiple times. Project director Derek Pyle has written about the evolution of the project on our blog.

We love to hear from you, so drop a line and let us know what you think!

Over three hundred people have been directly involved in production of our audio. We dedicate this 2017 edition to all the good people working behind the scenes — all the collaborators, producers, audio engineers, editors, and everyone who supported us.

To everyone who believed in and encouraged the project when it was still a weird little idea, helping us grow in size and in spirit, thank you for fostering what is now a rather large but equally weird idea.

NO PRESIDENT

"There is no governor present anywhere"
Chuang Tzu

There is no governor anywhere; you are all absolutely free. There is no restraint that cannot be escaped. We are all absolutely free. If everybody could go into dhyana at will, nobody could be controlled — by fear of prison, by fear of whips or electroshock, by fear of death, even. All existing society is based on keeping those fears alive, to control the masses. Ten people who know would be more dangerous than a million armed anarchists.”

Daisy Hilarious

Daisy Eris Campbell offers a breathlessly hilarious monologue on The Odditorium podcast. (no 34).

Daisy Campbell, (daughter of the performer Ken Campbell) takes us on a rollercoaster adventure exploring the ancient practise of gastromancy – divination from the stomach. It’s one of the most entertaining but weirdest talks we’ve ever had on the Odditorium so hang in there! Meanwhile in the studio, the two Davids appear to be having a spot of bother with the disembodied voice of Aleister Crowley.
Daisy's piece starts four minutes in...

2023 - The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (sic)

Well we're back again,
They never kicked us out,
twenty thousand years of
SHOUT SHOUT SHOUT

Down through the epochs and out across the continents, generation upon generation of the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu have told variants of the same story - an end of days story, a final chapter story. But with one hope, even if the hope at times seems forlorn.

The story contained in this trilogy is the latest telling. Here it is presented as a utopian costume drama, set in the near future, written in the recent past.
Read with care.

One Last Chance - auction of RAW memorabilia

Long term students of RAW, members of the Maybe Logic Academy, and even subscribers to this blog, will know about the auctions done in Bob's last few months, to help with his medical expenses, etc.

Bob Campbell devised a unique currency for RAW to sign (and make 'real') which got sold off;  Old Bob sold off various of his Tarot packs, card by card; most interestingly (particularly if you are into psychometry), he began to sell of bits and pieces from his home - T-shirts, magazines, art, trinkets, etc.

[Note: the links to eBay auctions, in the above mentioned posts from 2006, will no longer work]

Well, if you missed those events, you get a second chance - because RAW's daughter Christine has decided to put a few more of his personal possessions up for auction - and you can tune into the action here.

More items will apparently get added over the coming days.

RIP RAW 111

It seems hard to believe that RAW died ten years ago, on 11/1 (UK) or 1/11 (US).   He died on Albert Hoffman's 101st birthday (when Albert was still alive and well) so that makes this Hofmann's 111th birthday.

111 appears repeatedly in Finnegans Wake, where it refers to the feminine principle, Anna Livia Plurabelle, often written as ALP (which cabalistically adds up to 111).   It seems entirely appropriate for Finnegans Wake to receive a reference (given the latest gossip) as the male hero, HCE, is guilty of watching two girls peeing in the park (not the most common sub-plot in a novel).  Most of the  current political news makes the Illuminatus! trilogy seem more like fact than fiction.     Uncanny.       RIP RAW.        Dove Sta Memoria.

Don't hold your breath in Santa Cruz

Hail Eris
It seems as though the plan to put on the Cosmic Trigger play in Santa Cruz - originally announced for this year - has gone on hold, (for a variety of reasons) but Daisy Eris Campbell may well visit the USA to promote the project.

Mama Sutra

The good news remains that the production will make an appearance in London, in May 2017.

21 performances at The Cockpit Theatre.

Do whatever it takes to get to see this production!

8 Circuit Brain song and dance
From the current newsletter:

"Hello you lovely Discordians,

*ANNOUNCEMENT RE SANTA CRUZ PILGRIMAGE*

So yes, I have publicly announced on at least 23 occasions that we would be making a pilgrimage to Santa Cruz, where Robert Anton Wilson lived and died, this year, the 10 year anniversary of his death.

This kind of public declaration worked a treat for pulling the Cosmic Trigger in Liverpool on November 23rd 2014, but that's the thing with Cosmic Triggers - they have a tendency to go off in your hand. And I think, bathed in the glory of our last adventure, I got a little trigger happy.

We're not - we now realise - at the Triggering phase when it comes to Santa Cruz. We are still very much in The Finding The Others phase.

So instead I'll come to the US this summer to stir up enthusiasm for a future happening. Tell me Stateside Dwellers; where shall I enthuse, who shall I meet, how shall we scheme? I'm thinking 13-23rd July to coincide with Robert Anton Wilson Day and the start of the Dog Days. But I'll come whenever you call.

I'm truly sorry to disappoint anyone who was all set for the Santa Cruz pilgrimage performance - but let's meet up when I'm there, and before you know it we'll be happily pulling Cosmic Triggers together."
